Spokane Beard & Mustache Club

Working with Cool Nonprofits

January 16, 2019 by Megan

As creatures hardwired to be social, humans naturally look to connect and support not just their kindred but their community. For many, that’s what gives us our guiding sense of purpose. Of course, community can mean a lot of different things, and it can be strengthened by something as natural and unassuming as FACIAL HAIR.

The Spokane Beard & Mustache Club was founded in 2012 and demonstrates how awesome (and generous) people with beards are. It’s not just about the aesthetics: every year, the Club donates thousands of dollars to local charities. Since 2012, they’ve donated over $75,000.

We first connected with the Club in 2017, when we interviewed their Club President Jeremy for PNW Difference Makers:

Since then, we’ve had the privilege of documenting their 2017 and 2018 Annual Epic Beard Competitions where men and women raise money and compete for the best beards (women compete in the Build-a-Beard category – it’s AWESOME). Members vote at the start of the year on which charity they’ll be supporting, so they can really get to know the organizations that they’re working to help. In 2018, they raised $17,174 for Embrace Washington and Teen & Kid Closet! Super inspiring.

For last year’s Epic Beard Competition, Adam came along to assist in the competitor portraits. He captured some behind-the-scenes photos, and with a little push, worked up the bravery to register for the competition! While he didn’t claim a prize, he had a blast and enjoyed the comradery. Most importantly, he was an amazing stand-in during set-up… It was super important to dial in that beard lighting just perfectly. Just look at that evolution! Thanks for your help, Adam!

The competition was fierce, yet friendly, and everyone had a great night, all the while raising money to support foster kids in our community. If you are still looking for your own giving community, whether you are bearded or not, give the Spokane Beard & Mustache Club a chance… they just might be the connection you are looking for.
