Day 7 – Wild quiet

Rasar, and Rockport

May 21, 2015 by Megan

Finishing up the hikes at Larrabee State Park (see previous post) and leaving the helpful neighbors and amenities of a hook-up campsite, we headed inland to Rasar and Rockport State Parks.

Being later in the day, the light was lovely for shooting in the open fields, along the treed paths, and across the Skagit River. We had heard there were elk about, and that this was a popular place for eagles to rest in the fall/winter… but sadly, on this visit the only wildlife I spotted barely missed getting caught in my hair.

Next up was Rockport, where the old growth has never been logged, creating such a dense natural forest that it has recently been deemed unsafe for campers resulting in the campgrounds being closed indefinitely.

This broken fir stump (below) earned its own sign along the trail for a known age of 314-years-old. Its life spanned from 1660-1974. Just imagine…

Makes me feel like an onlooker at a sad scene, like these towering giants are looking down emotively at their fallen and splintered brethren. Especially in this image.

Other than the attendant at the welcome station at Rasar, we didn’t meet another soul the whole day. To have two massive lots of land basically to ourselves felt a bit eerie, but the quiet was also nice on the heels of so many interactions the day before. And with such a challenging day head of us.
